$250 Cost Of Living Payment

What is the cost of living payment?

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg announced in his 2022-23 Budget overview that six million eligible Australians will be getting a $250 cash bonus to help with the rising cost of living. The tax-free payments will go to welfare recipients, veterans, pensioners and concession cardholders.

Services Australia will be sending the payments into eligible accounts automatically from Thursday, April 28. This means that, if you’re eligible, you won’t need to do anything to get it. Recipients will receive an email confirmation that the payment has been made (watch out for the phishing emails pretending to be Services Australia!)

The Cost of Living Payment is not taxable and you don’t need to report it as income. Here's the results so far:

You’ll get it if you’re residing in Australia on 29 March 2022, and either:

  • getting an eligible payment
  • have an eligible concession card

You’ll only get one Cost of Living Payment, even if you get more than one eligible payment or concession card.
